Around the World in the Good Ship DOGGEREL, 184

A doggerel series about the countries of the world.

Ukraine.

And now it is time—I have got to explain
What I know I can share here about the Ukraine.

We know once it was part of the USSR,
But now so much has changed—has progressed very far.

It still lies alongside what we call the Black Sea.
And its capital, Kiev, has much majesty.

And for thousands of years human beings have roamed
All across its vast lands where the reapers have combed

All the grain (mostly wheat) which sustains human life—
And the years have been full of both calm and fierce strife.

It broke free from the Soviets in ’91—
Yes, their freedom they craved—and their freedom they won.

And its woodlands are full of the the small and the great—
From its deer to its elk to its bear (they are great!).

And some wolves wander ’round—and they howl in the night,
And that howling creates in the timid some … fright.

There’s a wildcat, as well, hunting over the place—
So be careful, you hear, if you value your face!
