Sound and Sense, 2-10

Time for more instances of the homophone: a word pronounced the same as another but differing in meaning, whether spelled the same way or not, as heir and air.

hoarse (adj.): having a harsh or rough sound or voice
horse (noun): a large animal that is used for riding or carrying or pulling things

He shouted until he was hoarse
At Churchill Downs. He hoped his horse
Would end the race in first (of course).

He’d bet the ranch—a fortune vast—
And so, of course, he was aghast
To watch his horse trot in … dead last.
