Sound and Sense, 2-4

Time for more instances of the homophone: a word pronounced the same as another but differing in meaning, whether spelled the same way or not, as heir and air.

1. hart (noun): a male deer, esp. a male red deer
2. heart (noun): the organ in your chest that pumps blood through your arteries; the heart thought of as the place where emotions are felt

The hart had such a loving heart
It was his most impressive part—
Those female deer (who aren’t too slow)
Were drawn to him—yes, every doe.

And so he romped with many does.
Result—as everybody knows:
The woods were full of countless fawns.
And later on, a statue (bronze)

The does raised in his memory.
They missed his gentle ways, you see.
They missed his kind and loving heart
They missed that energetic hart.

But he had died so early on—
It seemed he blinked and he was gone.
And Dr. Deer (authority)
Said, “Just too much activity!”
