Favorite Books
Throughout My Life
14: The Spirit of the Border, 1906, by Zane Grey (1872–1939)
A favorite book from boyhood times—
I’m not too sure just how
It found its way into our house—
I wish I had it now.
I remember an adventure, and
A name or two as well—
Like Lewis Wetzel—that’s the one
That I pull from the well.
And there were Indians involved—
Some battles here and there.
(As long as there were battles, well,
The rest? I didn’t care.)
I read it several times, of course.
Then moved, I know, along.
And then lost track. But yesterday—
Like some forgotten song—
The title came right back to me—
And memories of the days
When I loved tales of wilderness—
A fervent boyhood phase!
Note: I’ve done some
checking: based on historical fact, set in the Ohio River Valley
