Lines Based on Synonyms for the Seven Deadly Sins
SEVEN DEADLY SINS: envy, gluttony, greed or avarice, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath

Wrath (s): belligerence

Oh, what a trait, belligerence
The rise of bile, the lack of sense.

It’s born of pure hostility
And once it’s loose, it ranges free.

Intimidation is one goal
Of this wild anger with no soul.

And domination lives in threat
Of violence—a bayonet

That pierces friendships—ends them all—
And drops on them the darkest pall.

Lines Based on Synonyms for the Seven Deadly Sins
SEVEN DEADLY SINS: envy, gluttony, greed or avarice, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath

Wrath (r): virulence

When virulence is running free
Throughout my heart and mind,
I try to think of other things—
To make myself more kind.

It doesn’t always happen, though—
And so I lose control—
Endangering, I well suppose,
My sad and troubled soul.

Close to the surface is my wrath—
I wish that it weren’t so.
I wish I were more mellow, calm—
Like resting sourdough.

SEVEN DEADLY SINS: envy, gluttony, greed or avarice, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath

Wrath (q): venom

My venom—as if from a snake—
Pours forth when when I’ve made a mistake—

Some stupid thing I should have known—
Some clumsy thing that I must own

And not blame on some other guy—
No, not his fault—oh, no, ’twas I!

I’m grateful—when that stuff has flowed
That I did not, you know, explode!

SEVEN DEADLY SINS: envy, gluttony, greed or avarice, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath

Wrath (p): biliousness

Biliousness? You’re full of bile—
And swollen with your angry style.

The Middle Ages: Bile explained
Why you were acting so … unchained—

A vicious dog whose chain had burst
And now was acting, well, its worst.

The word remains—as does our rage.
(Sometimes, I think, we need a cage!)

SEVEN DEADLY SINS: envy, gluttony, greed or avarice, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath

Wrath (o): wrathfulness

I’ve heard that wrathfulness is fun
To watch explode in anyone.

Of course, that only could be true
If anger were not aimed at you

For if it were? A different tale
Of words that hit like pounding hail,

Of fists that land upon your beach—
Of help that lies beyond your reach—

Of sadness, pain, and 911.
Still sound as if it’s lots of fun?

Wrath (n): spleen

Most evident, right now, your spleen
You’re showing just how much you’re mean—
You’re really making quite a scene.

You’re raging now about your meal—
Can you imagine how you’d feel
If you were married to a heel

Like you? A very angry mate
Who saw what food was on her plate
And then began to deprecate

What you had cooked?

Wrath (m): rage

Well, Dylan Thomas wrote about
How all of us should rage
Against the dying of the light
As we grow ill or age.

And rage, I guess, might surely have
Some therapeutic gifts—
Providing them who feel so low
Some therapeutic lifts.

That poem makes me weep a bit—
And feel a little blue.
For Dylan Thomas felt the truth—
And all these words ring true.
